BELL FROG
Endangered
semi-aquatic Green & Golden Bell Frog is bright green and rich metallic
golden bronze in colour. It is found amongst bullrushes and reeds
in streams, swamps, lagoons, ponds and dams in south-eastern Australia.
Active at night while during the day they enjoy basking in the sun
and slipping into the water to cool off. It is a voracious feeder
and catches its prey by lunging forward and seizing it with both
hands. Reasons for decline include destruction of wetlands and the
introduction of the Gambusia or "Mosquito Fish" which is wanted
for crimes against native frogs. Gambusia eat the tadpoles and eggs
of the Bell Frog.
The 'Fantasea Collection' wildlife design portrays
the beauty of the fine and fragile Green & Golden Bell Frog while creating an awareness
that many species of frogs are endangered.
